Guide to Aging Gracefully

Jasmine El KordiThere’s no way around it—our bodies change as we get older. We may find ourselves dealing with many, different health issues, our energy levels may decrease, our social life may change as we rotate out of professions and our children leave home.  But it doesn’t have to be a diminishing, less joyful time in our lives.

Here is my advice: “there are two things you need to age gracefully: Yoga and Collagen!”

Yoga is a wonderful anti-aging tool, capable of preserving our vitality, relieving symptoms and even improving medical outcomes. Older adults are the fastest growing segment of our population and they are increasingly turning to yoga to improve quality of life. The physical benefits of the practice include maintaining flexibility and mobility, lowering blood pressure, easing chronic conditions such as back pain and arthritis, and potentially helping to prevent major health crises like heart disease and strokes. Practicing yoga helps us to maintain stability and balance, a critical factor in preventing falls– one of the top reasons for decline in older adults.

Flexibility, stability, and vitality continue to sustain our bodies from a physical perspective as we grow older, but there is an even greater benefit that unfolds with regular yoga practice.  Self-acceptance, introspection, and forgiveness deepen within us as we move through the beautiful postures of our practice. We learn to honor the limitations and appreciate the possibilities of this stage of life, we feel the universal rhythm that flows through us as we inhale and exhale, we sense the connection to everything and everyone around us as we experience the harmony of own body, mind, and soul.

And finally, at the end of every yoga session, we move into the most important posture – Savasana or resting pose. When under stress our bodies release cortisol which is damaging on many levels and speeds up aging. Any form of yoga, but especially restorative yoga, is a natural way to remedy the effects of tension. As we reflect on our lives, dedicated yogis point to the internal benefits of the practice as the greatest gifts.

Nutrition, of course, plays a large role in our overall health and is a key player in the aging process. It is vital that we maintain a healthy balance of protein, fruits, and vegetables, all the while drinking plenty of water to keep us hydrated. From my own experience, I can tell you that when you eat healthily, you really do feel stronger and more energetic. Unfortunately, getting the appropriate amounts of vitamins, minerals, and proteins can require complicated diets that are hard to maintain on a regular basis. There is, however, one easy addition to your diet that will help restore firmness and elasticity to your skin, protect your cartilage and joints, and visibly slow down the aging process: collagen.

Collagen is a protein found in your skin, bones, joints, hair, and nails that has a big impact on the way we age. It helps keep us strong and flexible, working to maintain muscle and connective tissue. It also helps minimize fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. As a powdered supplement, it couldn’t be a simpler addition to your daily routine. Just stir a spoonful into your morning coffee or smoothie (here is a great recipe). One of the great things about this supplement is the fact that you can add it to just about any part of your breakfast. Collagen PLUS Rejuven-Age reverses the effects of aging on a cellular level and helps you gain beauty, radiance, vitality, and wellbeing. This truly is one of the easiest steps you can take towards aging gracefully.
